Sacramento County is partnering with the California Department of Ageing and AARP’s Age-Friendly Network of States and Communities to make the Sacramento region livable and accessible for County residents throughout their lifespan. In November 2018, the Sacramento County Adult and Aging Commission voted to recommend the County join the Age-Friendly Network of States and Communities.
Two years later, the Board of Supervisors approved the recommendation, and Sacramento County officially joined the Age-Friendly Network in February 2021. Once enrolled in the network, a community begins a multi-year program cycle consisting of a community assessment, an action plan, and a progress report. Sacramento County conducted its community assessment over the last couple of years, consisting of a community-wide survey and 26 targeted listening sessions.
Using grant funding from the California Department of Ageing, the County completed its first-ever Local Ageing & Disability-Friendly Action Plan in January 2025. The County Board of Supervisors voted to adopt the Action Plan on February 25, 2025.
A significant demographic shift is occurring across the county, the state and the country. By 2030, nearly 25% of the county’s population will be aged 60 and older. Nearly 1 in 3 residents will be either an older adult or living with a disability. This represents an opportunity to revisit how we design our communities.
The Local Ageing & Disability-Friendly Action Plan is focused on improving access to existing resources. Too many older adults and people with disabilities do not have equitable access to their basic needs. We heard that through listening sessions with residents, which became the basis for the Action Plan.
